Cooking with Kandy*

Cooking Show Celeb in Danger

Kandy is a popular food show host and cookbook author to whom strange things have been happening lately.  Family and co-workers think she needs a bodyguard to protect her against somebody who clearly is wishing to harm her. Kandy doesn’t want her life restricted. She eventually does agree to a bodyguard, and Josh–a private investigator who does a little protection sometimes–becomes a fixture in her life. As they spend time together and get to know each other, an attraction develops between them (though he was attracted to her from the beginning).

Will they be able to figure out who is threatening Kandy’s life? Will Kandy and Josh give into their feelings for each other?

The book pulls you in right away as you see Josh on Kandy’s set while he’s waiting to talk with someone about the job. The author does a good job of describing the food show set and Kandy’s presentation. I wondered how much food TV she watched! I’ve never been on one of those sets but what she describes seems very realistic. Kandy seemed like a real person, with vulnerabilities, despite her fame. The author has created a fascinating set of secondary characters who are a delight to watch in themselves, especially Kandy’s mother and sisters. Josh and Kandy had good chemistry.

If you enjoy bodyguard romance or romantic suspense, you might like this delicious (recipes included!) book.

Delightful Worldbuilding and Characters in Paranormal Cozy Mystery

Things have been quiet in Brimstone, but now it appears that three witches have gone missing at the Mirella Retirement Village. Blythe sends Cassia and Stanley to investigate. They are at first thwarted by the grandson of one of the witches, Trent, but he soon joins their investigation. It appears that his grandma has a spellbook that reveals dark secrets.

Is karma paying back Trent’s grandma? Is Trent really helping or harming? What about the healing blue flowers that are so much a part of the village?

This is the first book I have read by this author. She has quite a way with describing settings as well as constructing a complex plot that’s still in the realm of a paranormal cozy. Stanley is an excellent character; I don’t think I’ve read another book that had such an awesome, human-like familiar. I was feeling Cassia’s horror right along with her when things didn’t look so good for the cat. I love the descriptions of the retirement village. Could you imagine living in such a place? The fun zone, the woods, the quiet place–I think I’d love it!

This is an absolutely delightful cozy, and if you enjoy paranormal ones, you might find this a very engaging and enjoyable read.

Murder Before New Shop Even Opens

The book starts off with a bang with a 911 call to report a dead body. Read Wine has not even opened yet, but the owners found a dead body who is well-known to them. It is the woman whom Sally’s husband left her for. This, of course, makes Sally suspect number one in the women’s murder. Her friends and fellow co-owners, Trixie and Cora, do not believe but she would be capable of it and seek clues that will track down the real killer. The killer who wants the money is still stalking Trixie.

Who killed the woman? Will the killer get what he wants? What lengths will the women go to on both counts?

I am of several minds about this book. I’ve read a lot of this author’s books lately, and I can see an improvement in her writing style around the depth of characterization and more solid narrative prose. That being said, she really needs to hire a good editor or proofreader–or replace the one she has–as this book is really flawed in terms of grammar, punctuation, and usage. I also thought that she had Trixie do something stupid and dangerous, and something that I am not sure fits with the character that we’ve seen in the prequel and previously in this book. In general, too, I’m not a fan of serialized novels unless that is stated clearly. That is not the case in this series. Supposedly this series is a prequel, book 1, and book 2, but they’re more like episodes in a longer work. I prefer to know these kinds of things at the beginning.

Creepy Tale Defies Categorization

The fictional town of Bulwark, Georgia, is a town of secrets and mysteries. When this book opens, sheriff Clay is investigating a strange, large puggle that has a car trapped inside it. Soon, we meet other residents of the town, as well as injured newcomers who claim their children were stolen by a witch who lives in a gingerbread house on a street that Clay has never heard of. Taking the couple to the ED, Clay meets his estranged wife, Jenna, who is a nurse there; they are divorcing due to struggling with the disappearance of their daughter but haven’t signed the papers yet to make it official.

What’s going on in this small town? What other strange things will the sheriff find? Who will die? Who is in danger? What will happen with Clay and Jenna?

To me, this book has an almost Twilight Zone or Twin Peaks feel to it. If you decide to read this book, you can choose to go into it knowing that little will make sense for quite a while. If you can let go and allow that to happen, you might enjoy the ride because this book does take you to strange places.

On the book review site where I downloaded the ARC for this book, it was listed as a cozy mystery, a paranormal romance, and a small-town romance. The cover says paranormal thriller. I can see where the author would have a hard time pinning down the specific genre or genres of this book. I would say there are paranormal aspects, romantic aspect, but I wouldn’t call it a paranormal romance as that suggests to me that, say, a witch and/or shifter love story is happening. That’s not what happens here. The book is super slow burn until you get to the end, so I wouldn’t quite call it a thriller either. There’s definitely an element of the gothic here as well with the creepy, hidden mansion. It’s definitely not a cozy as it is far too dark for that. Although it takes place in a small town, I wouldn’t call it a “small-town romance” either. Maybe call it paranormal suspense with romantic aspects, but even that might not be wholly accurate as the paranormal elements weren’t clear until later in the book.

I am a registered nurse and have worked night shift in the hospital. There are definitely some medical and nursing errors in the book, but they most likely would not disturb anyone who is not a medical or nursing professional.

In a fun twist, the book has two alternate endings for the reader to enjoy and choose from.

Chick Lit with a Side of Mystery

This prequel to the Read Wine series introduces us to the three ladies who will be running the bookshop/coffee and wine bar. The first part of the book feels more like chick lit rather than a mystery. All the women seem to be at pivotal points in their lives when they decide to make open the store (divorce, losing a job, etc.). Soon, however, days before they get the shop going, things start to seem to go awry. Who is trying to thwart them?

This is a very short prequel that ends on a cliffhanger, unfortunately. The book does have some issues with formatting. I did receive an ARC of this, so I don’t know if the problem exists as well in the commercial download. I did check the 10% available on Amazon, but it ended just before the problems with formatting started in my edition. Along with these formatting issues, there are some problems with grammar, punctuation, and usage.

I like the interaction of the three friends, and I’m interested to see how that pans out in the rest of the series–as well as get that resolution did the cliffhanger.

Lawyer who Doesn’t Like to Practice Law Investigates Murder

Chloe is a lawyer who doesn’t like practicing the law! While working as an office manager at a law firm, she has been an adjunct professor of law on the side. Going to interview for a full-time position at Spencer University, she doesn’t expect to get it. She does, and on her first day at the university, she discovers the man she has come to replace lying dead on his desk. He was planning to take a sabbatical from teaching to defend a man who is charged with embezzlement, Randall Whittier. Chloe decides to go to the dead professor’s home, where she runs into Randall. Rather quickly she determines that he is not directly involved in the professor’s murder, and the two team up to help get to the bottom of what’s going on.

Is Chloe correct in her assessment of Randall? Who would want the Professor dead?

I enjoyed the second book of this new series by Laina Turner. I was expecting to see the amateur sleuth from the previous book here again, but I was pleasantly surprised so discover that, while the university is going to stay the same in the series, the amateur sleuths will change. I enjoyed the interaction between Chloe and Randall, two strangers who don’t know each other but want to figure out what has transpired.

Muddy Murder, Danger, and Romance

Emily and her daughter are participating in a reenactment of the Seminole War when Emily ends up falling over in the mud while trying to steady Detective Lewis… right on top of a dead body! After Emily’s previous misadventures in the other books of this series, Lewis tells her not to get involved in the investigation. Of course, Emily can’t help herself, and she drags her friends and families into it as well.

Who killed the high school principal at the reenactment? How will Lewis handle Emily’s involvement in the investigation? Will Emily be putting herself and those she cares about in danger because of her involvement?

There are so many things to like about this cozy mystery. I haven’t read many cozies where the story is told from the perspective of the amateur sleuth and the actual detective. I love seeing the story from both viewpoints; it added depth not usually seen when we can only know part of the story. I like that this was a longer cozy, as I have been reading shorter ones lately. This allowed the author time to build up some suspense as Emily placed herself and others in her sphere in danger. It also allowed Emily and the detective to develop their flirtation more.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a little suspense, a bit of danger, and a dash of romance, you might enjoy this book.

Death by Suspenders*

mho Murdered the Professor?

On the first day back for fall term, professor Olivia and her colleagues are stunned to learn that one of their number has been found dead. While details aren’t forthcoming for a while, the fact that the police have an investigation leads them to think that foul play was involved. Olivia can’t stop her curiosity; while David wasn’t well-liked, who would murder him? Soon, Olivia starts her own investigation with the begrudging help of her possible new romantic interest, Don, who is in charge of campus security.

Who murdered the professor? A colleague or student? Someone from his personal life? Will Olivia help get to the bottom of it, or will she just hinder the investigation? Will she and Don continue their flirtation?

I enjoy cozy mysteries, and I love the university setting of this particular novel. Colleges are fishbowls, each their own unique microcosm, and so are the perfect fertile ground for mystery and intrigue. I enjoyed Olivia’s interactions with her best girlfriend and Don. The plot had some good twists and turns, and whom the eventual murderer turned out to be was a surprise. The book is very short and can be read in less than a couple of hours.

Unfortunately, the book was marred with a variety of errors. The author misspelled a character’s name twice. There were many issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage, with the most problematic being commas. They were missing in a variety of places: at the end of long introductory phrases, before the coordinating conjunction in a sentence composed of two independent clauses, and in other places—like before “not”—that actually hindered the proper reading of the sentence.

If you can overlook these sometimes confusing errors, you might enjoy the storyline of the novel and the new characters introduced in this series.

Murder on the Back Burner

Presley’s back in Chicago after her vacation in Wisconsin, and the store is doing record business under the direction of the new staff. Presley’s barely settled in when a customer is murdered right in her store. The woman looks like she has just collapsed, but she was overdosed with insulin, apparently right in the store. Cooper’s back from New York, and it seems like he’s in Chicago to stay as he has hired a new worker who can do a lot of the legwork. But then someone breaks into Cooper’s office.

Who killed Susan in the shop? Will Presley be under investigation? Who’s the culprit at Cooper’s office?

I’ve been reading the series in order over the last couple of weeks. I found this installment a little frustrating on several levels. I was definitely happy to see Cooper back as I enjoy his and Presley’s interactions. But I felt like the mysteries took second place to relating what was going on in Presley’s life, like the time she spends with Cooper and at Silk. This book seems to have a more significant number of issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage compared to early books of the series as well as other current published fiction. Commas were hugely problematic, not being where they needed to be—like between independent clauses in a compound subject or after introductory phrases—as well as improperly used in a way which formed comma splices. A character’s name was misspelled. I am an RN, so I can state that the way she had Presley discuss insulin was not true to fact; Presley states, “I thought those injectors came in regulated doses.” Insulin is not given to a person in preset amounts like a pill (though a specific number of units is prescribed depending on need). Instead, a person would either draw up the amount from a vial or use an insulin pen, dialing up or pulling back the number of units needed. So a person with ill intent could definitely draw up and inject a lethal dose.

By the way, this book ends on a cliffhanger.

Murders in Wisconsin

Presley heads off to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, staying at one of her boutique client’s rental properties. She’s gotten a new manager at Silk, and even though Katy’s gone, Presley is able to take a little time off. She goes out to walk on the beach along Lake Michigan and what she thinks might be a big piece of driftwood is actually a dead body! Can’t she get some proper time off? She starts interacting with the locals and gets invited to a wedding. The bride discovers another dead body. What’s going on in this town? Will Presley be in danger.

I missed seeing Presley’s interactions with the familiar characters like Katy and Cooper, but it was fun to see Presley off on her own finding more trouble. I found myself wondering if the author is a Jane Austen fan, as the name of the militia compound was Wickham Place. I liked the slice-of-small-town life we get in this installment of the Presley Thurman Mystery series.
