An Automated Murder*

A Mystery with a Surprising Culprit!

Granny and Abigail are at it again when a special Christmas unveiling at the Wallace Point toy store turns into a crime scene. A toy cannon automaton apparently kills a man in a locked room. In his dying breath, the man states that the shop owner did it. But Granny and Abigail can’t believe that this family man and business owner would be capable of doing such a thing. Who is responsible for the dastardly deed?

I have read the other cozy mysteries in this series, and I enjoy the small-town world that the author has created. I adore the relationship between Granny and Abigail. The fictional town has all be quirky characters and zany happenings that you love and expect to find in a cozy mystery. There are even delightful dogs, Thor and Missy, though we didn’t see as much of them in this book as we have in previous books. I love the subtle and not-so-subtle humor that the author is able to inject into these books. In this one, I love how a yacht was named the Knotty Buoy. Perfect! I enjoyed seeing Wallace Point at Christmastime. It’s not just murder and secrets in this book but also Christmas lights and cookies! The answer to the “whodunit” question at the heart of every mystery is an actual surprise! As I am rarely surprised by any book, let alone a mystery, this made the book even more delightful. If you enjoy well-imagined, humorous cozy mysteries, you may well enjoy this book and the rest of the series.

Slow-Burn Friends-to-Lovers with Focus on Family

Em is just coming down from double heartbreak after her boyfriend of sometime left her for her best girlfriend. She goes to a lovely little cottage by the sea to lick her wounds. Originally, she and that girlfriend had been planning to go together; her new cottage mate is actually the best man from her sister’s wedding. Devin is a pediatrician who devotes much time to his patients both stateside and in Costa Rica. As they stay together in the cottage, they become friends. When they both return to their normal lives, they maintain the connection and eventually become more.

This is super slow burn friends-to-lovers romance that has a big focus on Family and what that means and how it shapes our actions and lives for both the families we are from and the families that we create (which are not always formed by bonds of blood). I loved the intergenerational aspect of this story; I loved both Gran and Ava (what a little sweetie!). Both Em and Devin are good and decent people who deserve each other and the life they want to create. I was surprised at the amount of landscaping discussion in this book! The book did feel a little too slow at times. The story arc covers a significant amount of time compared to how long the book is. The author sometimes glossed over and summarized events in some places while perhaps showing too much detail in others. But if you just accept that and go along for the ride, this is an enjoyable book.

A Little Bit of Steam in Time Travel Romance

Lainie is now back in the present with Hjalmar’s brother and mother. Time has gone by in the present, and things aren’t looking good for Hjalmar. What will they and the Archivist do to help? I enjoyed this installment of the serial. The author put a lovely little hot scene with Asger at the beginning, but there was a fun bit with the Archivist as well. The Archivist is not happy with her and all that she and Hjalmar did. The author ended with quite a fun little cliffhanger, which I am interested to see resolved. At the end, too, the author promised more in this Time Travel Academy series; I am so glad she’s going to continue it, as I have enjoyed this world she has created very much.

New Adult Adventures in France

Young, free-spirited Canadian tomboy Niki is having a grand adventure in France. When she reaches a small village, she decides to stay for a while longer to help one of the young men there whom she meets. He is a gentle giant who reminds her of her brother who killed himself, and she feels a need to help him win the woman he has been pining for. There’s another Canadian there, and he finds her equal parts intriguing and annoying.

For the most part, this is a light romance perfect for a summer getaway read. It is quite steamy in parts, as Niki embarks on a sexual relationship with both men at different times for different reasons. I enjoyed the opening of the book, which showed Niki’s fearless nature. For all the lightness of most of the book, there are moments of poignancy, especially when Niki talks about her brother and after Niki is injured towards the end of the story.

Foul and Crude; Hard to Believe It Is From a Major Publisher

I was intrigued by this book because I am always drawn to books with themes about overweight and body acceptance as these are issues I am intimately familiar with. So I wasn’t quite prepared for how raw this book would be. What do I mean by raw? This story is told from the perspective of the overweight heroine in the first person. The guts she lacks when dealing with members of the opposite sex—and her entire experience of men shows them to be at times cruel and unkind because of her size—is not lacking in her forthright assessments and actions and crude language. I had signed up for this book at a review site that doesn’t give previews, so I was flying blind choosing it based on the blurb alone. Frankly, I am somewhat appalled at the level of swearing, crude language, and just plain icky thoughts and actions that this book is full of. I had a hard time getting through it, and I actually found myself wondering if young women these days actually talk to each other like this and think this way. I, for one, hope they do not. While I was sympathetic to the heroine’s weight issue and problems with men because of it, I just couldn’t see her as a completely sympathetic character; she was just too brassy and crude, and I thought her mind and mouth were always in the gutter. Also, I didn’t like reading some details of her experiences. I know in writing there is a big push to show, rather than tell, but I don’t really want to see the heroine’s anus hair mentioned in a book I’m reading just for an escape or guilty pleasure! Yes, this does happen!

Power of Minimalism*

Overview of Minimalism

Nearly half of this book is a very high-level overview of the concepts about minimalism, an idea that has become popular lately. The first part is actually somewhat repetitious and goes into some of the philosophy of minimalism. After the halfway point, the book gives specific instructions about decluttering your physical space and your digital life. The author then also tries to apply the minimalism to ideas that it isn’t usually associated with, like diet, sleep, and relationships. The second half of the book is more practical than the first, but I didn’t think it successfully integrated with those latter concepts that I just mentioned. For instance, the diet section didn’t seem to me to be about minimalism; instead, it appeared to be about healthful eating. In general, I thought that many of the suggestions about how to be more minimalistic seemed impractical or just wrong; for instance, it is hard for me to imagine a monastically bare bedroom as he espouses. I question, too, if one truly did strip everything in all areas of life mentioned in this book as he states, what would life be like? What would one actually do? Those who are new to the concept of minimalism might like this short look at the philosophy of the idea as well as some ways to apply it. But those who already know some about this won’t find anything here that isn’t better stated elsewhere.

Ponderous Stay in a Small Town

Poppy Williams is on a cross-country trek and is running out of gas. Turns out this mom of four has a bad virus. Luckily, she collapsed in the arms of the police chief in a small town in Colorado after she accidentally ran through a stop sign. He and his mother care for her and her children while she comes back to help. Will Poppy stay in this small town or continue on to her mother in California?

This is a very long book. I thought the author spent too much time on scenes that actually don’t do much to further the plot or round out characterization. There were places where she was clearly attempting humor, but it fell flat because of awkward phrasing or the strange images of the word produced. I found this book to be tedious.

Another Fun Trip to Alienn

It is brother Axel’s turn for romance! The woman he thinks is just a worker on board a ship visiting the way-station is actually from one of the more prominent families on Alpha-Prime. She has never fully felt appreciated there but has lived the life that has been proscribed for her—including agreeing to an arranged marriage. Meeting Axel gets her thinking about the possibilities.

This is now the fourth books that I have read in this series about Alienn, Arkansas. Like the rest, I thoroughly enjoyed this installment. There’s delightful tongue-in-cheek humor that at times borders on slapstick with great turns of phrase. The pacing of the book is right on. I love getting glimpses of the other characters I’ve come to know and love, like the other Grey brothers and their Aunt Dixie. Axel was sweet when he just fell for her so quickly, not really know that much about her. He is a simple man who just wants the woman of his dreams.

Shifters of Brigantia*

Mega Collection of Shifter Series

Oh, my! What a fantastic box set of 12 paranormal shifter romance novellas! There are actually 3 series included, with 4 books each. I’ve enjoyed a previous series by this author, but I hadn’t read any from these series. These stories are different from your typical shifter romance ones in that there is a greater story arc that covers the entire mega-series, the classic fight between Good and Evil, Life and Destruction, and the imagined world (and its history and rules) is more complex than is typical. Even though each story is relatively short, the characters feel well developed and three dimensional. The heroes and heroines have undeniable chemistry. Some stories had a depth of emotion that I found surprising for both the subgenre and the length of the novella. I did think that the beginnings of some of them had a bit too much of an informational dump, but I tend to see that a lot in novellas, where authors seem to need to “get it all out there” so they can go on with the story they want to tell. I also thought that most of them did end a little too abruptly; again, this is something I feel like I often see in series, where the author doesn’t want to give away too much that might spoil the other books.

I did like how each of the three series that are included in this mega collection is based around the concept not only the animals—white tiger, jaguar, and panther—but also the idea that these animals represent in this world—guardian, champion, and assassin respectively. The magical women are paired with the type of hero that can best protect her and her magic. If you enjoy complex magical shifter romance, you may very well enjoy this well-written collection of series.

The Plague Doctor and the Pussycat*

Short Intro to Series

Witch Clara can’t help but interfere when her increasingly more fanatically conservative community—which doesn’t believe in vaccines—is overrun with measles cases. The healing soup she made for the children helped them, but now her secret is out!

This is a super short story that means to introduce this series. There’s not room for much depth, as you might imagine. I thought that the cat and the heroine sounded a little too much like each other; not much distinguished them. This really didn’t whet my appetite for more.
