Reading Fanatic Reviews

Books to Add to Your TBR list... or Not!

Hey, ya’ll! I’m VERY behind getting my reviews up on the website! I’ve increased the reading and reviewing, leaving less of my leisure time available to update this website. I’ll do weekly posts with links to my reviews at Amazon; you can also check out my Amazon and Goodreads profiles.

By the way, I’m now a top 50 Amazon.com reviewer (#12 currently) and the top 8 US reviewer of all time on Goodreads (and top 9 in the world)… and the #6 US reviewer and #8 in the world in the past year. Cool stuff!

I hope to make updates to this site soon!

One Night for Seduction*

How to Win a Wager and a Wife

The Duke of Colehaven is not one to pass up a wager, and he hasn’t lost one in 10 years. For this wager, he has to find a husband for the ward of one of his good friends. She has been called unmarriageable. Diana is a contented bluestocking spinster who wants nothing to do with marriage, as she doesn’t want to be controlled by any man. She has a great appreciation of numbers and lives a double life acting as if she were a government inspector. She goes to businesses and makes sure that they are using proper weights and measures so they don’t cheat the customers…or themselves!

Will the Duke be able to find a man willing to marry this woman? Will he be able to convince Diana that she should marry?

I found this to be a delightfully written book. There is a lot of humor, a lot of intelligence (and some interesting chess games!), and a lot of witty or telling banter between characters. The characters in this book are three dimensional–both the leads and the secondary characters. Diana is a fantastic heroine. She’s very smart, surprisingly funny, and knows her own mind. To hear her go on about mathematics and weights and measures was more amusing than it sounds. She’s very independent and believes in reciprocity between men and women in all things. Cole’s a great character as well. He, too, is not interested in marrying; he has very specific ideas about what his proper duchess should be like, and he hasn’t met her yet. He never expected to be the duke, so he treats people better than most others of his station. As Diana says, he is nice. I loved watching his relationship with his sister, Felicity. She is an excellent character in her own right, and brother and sister interacted well in a way that seemed natural between loving siblings.

If you enjoy well-written Regency with a little bit of humor and a bluestocking heroine, you might enjoy this book.

Time Portal to Dark Time in American History

Kathryn, an investigative TV journalist, loves her grandmother, but thinks she is not quite in her right mind when she starts talking about seeing a Cherokee woman at a farm nearby. The problem is, there is no farm close to them. After investigating with Grandma, Kathryn changes her mind when she is transported back to the 1840s. Forest Water is a woman from that time who was left behind on the trail of tears and trapped on what used to be her family’s farmstead by a brutal white man. Kathryn keeps going back in time, wanting to help the young woman. Soon, she finds that more is at stake than the woman’s freedom and her life.

Will Kathryn be able to help the Cherokee woman? Can she keep the dangers at bay? Will Forest Water be free of the man harming her?

This book was well written. There’s a good mix of dialogue and narrative prose; she doesn’t hit you over the head with a lot of backstory all at once. The story unfolds naturally, as we learn along with Kathryn. It’s clear that Kathryn and her grandmother have a good relationship, even when Kathryn doesn’t believe her. It’s always lovely to see warm, intergenerational relationships. Oh, my goodness, poor Forest Water! What she had to go through! Even though this is fiction, it brings home the atrocities that happened at that time.

This book is a real page-turner. The author made the time travel aspect seem plausible. You can’t help but feel for these two women as they struggle against forces that are so strong. Yet, the fight is important. I loved how the author interwove romance relationships for both of the women into the plot. Something for them both to have hope for.

If you enjoy time travel and romance steeped in one of the dark times in America’s past, you might enjoy this very different take on time travel romance.

Problems with Roommate’s Company

Presley’s back in Chicago, and Katy is staying with her and Jared while she puts the debacle of her near wedding behind her. Presley thought Cooper was still out of the country after his failed proposal, but she finds out he’s been back to their hometown. Why hasn’t he called to let her know that he is back in the States? Jared has some unexpected time off from work because one of his co-workers has been murdered. On top of that, his company is suffering because someone is leaking their ideas to rivals, who then present the same ideas to the potential customer, making Jared’s company appear as if it is the one that is stealing concepts.

Why was Jared’s co-worker murdered? Who is the mole, and is that related to the murder? Can Jared’s company get its reputation and clients back? Will Cooper give Presley a call? Or will she have to call him?

This book concentrates on figuring out the murderer, but Presley can’t get Cooper out of her mind. I was glad to see Cooper back, even peripherally, because I do enjoy the dynamics of a couple. I like seeing more of Katy; she has some big decisions to make, and it was interesting to see her work through them. The author has created a well-developed but small set of secondary characters that add substance to the series, particularly in this novel where we see more of Katy and Jared.

The Vikings: From Odin to Christ*

Post-Pagan Vikings

If you are familiar with the image of Vikings as portrayed in modern movies and culture, this book will paint a completely different and more historically accurate picture. It traces the progression of Christianity through the geographical areas that we consider to be Viking territory. Viking, as the authors point out, is a term that more accurately describes an action than a people, even though we tend to see it as the latter these days.

The book is nicely divided into chapters that show how the Christian transformation of Viking territory was not one simple movement. It was particular to each region, based a lot on the area’s history and the social context. The authors present both analysis and excerpts from old sagas. I appreciated that they included a very detailed list of names, definitions, and notes that I would recommend you bookmark so you can turn back to it as you follow the complex histories of these lands. I also appreciated that the authors took a neutral stance on paganism versus Christianity. The book is a nonprejudiced, non-demonizing, balanced look at how the societies changed with the coming of Christianity.

If you have any interest whatsoever in Viking history, you will find this book about their Christian age to be a fascinating and in-depth one.

Beauty Salon Murder

After a couple of books where Presley’s been in Texas and Cabo San Lucas with Cooper, she’s back in the Chicagoland area, and this book is about a little girl time. Or it would have been if Presley hadn’t discovered a dead body in her girlfriend’s beauty shop just when she arrived back in her hometown just a little south of Chicago. Her friend Katy doesn’t know the realtor, but Katy’s fiance does. Oh, and before this all happened, Presley was trying out a new career of writing a food blog.

Will Presley try to figure out the murder? Does her friend’s fiance have anything to do with it? Who would have something against a realtor anyway? Will Presley finally have struck gold in her new career as a food blogger, or is this 30-something woman still trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up?

It was fun to see the switch up in this novel. The last couple of books have focused on Presley and Cooper, and now it’s time for Presley to return to her roots. It was fun to see her interact with some of her gal pals and her mother.

Fae Princess in Post-Apocalyptic World

Wolf Blessed follows the adventures of a fae princess who ran away from the fae realm only to wind up in a post-apocalyptic world where the fae are blamed for the disaster! A wolf shifter honor guard sent by her mother, the queen, finally tracked her down, but Rhianna does not want their help. Soon, she’s captured by people who believe that having a full-blood Fae like her will help them restore balance and order to the world. Her wolf honor guard retrieves her a few weeks later, but they find something else dark and mysterious going on where she was held.

Will Rhianna stay with her wolves this time and let them protect her? Does the fae have something to do with causing the apocalypse? Will Rhianna and the wolves get back to the fae realm? What strange experiment are the bad guys doing with the witches?

Goodness, this book had a lot going on in it! It’s a relatively short book, so with so much going on, there wasn’t as much space as I would have liked for characterization. I liked the wolf honor guard; they were all that that name suggests. I would have loved to have seen her have more time with the wolves.

If you like fast-paced shifter novels and don’t mind that there’s not much characterization, you might enjoy this relatively quick read.

Rabbit Shifter Romance? LOL!

Hard-driving Latina marketing whiz Lily is taking time off to participate in her friend’s wedding in Scotland. As the wedding party mingles before the big day, she has an instant attraction to the tall, dark, and handsome best man. She’s not interested in a man, marriage, or a family; it’s all about the career for her. Harry, the best man, feels this instant attraction as well, and because he is a shifter, her pheromones are telling his inner animal that she is interested even though she is denying it.

Will Lilly take a chance on Harry? Will she be surprised that he’s a shifter? How will she react to his sister animal?

Oh, my gosh! What a hilarious book! If you’ve read shifter romance before, you are familiar with the sometimes very serious tropes that are common to the genre. This book is a total send-up of the shifter romance. I might go so far as to say it’s a parody of it, which makes the reading a lot of fun. So long as you don’t go into it thinking that it’s a serious shifter romance and you have a good sense of humor, you will appreciate the funny moments that keep coming in this book. Even the way that they describe each other seems to be lampooning the overblown way in which heroes and heroines in romance describe each other. One of the first bits of parody happens when we learn what Harry’s shifter animal is. He’s a bunny shifter! He’s a little envious of the polar bear and unicorn shifters that he knows. LOL!

I don’t want to give too much away because this book is just fun and funny to read. If you got a sense of humor about shifter romance oh, you will love this send-up of the genre.

Studying Her Vikings*

First Days at Time Travel School

We meet Lainie as she says goodbye to her mother for the last time. Now accepted into the Time Travel Academy, she can have no contact with her mother from this point on. Transported away, she only feels slight effects from the journey, and so her education is fast-tracked because that means she will most likely be able to travel back further in time without ill effect. In this episode of the serial, Lainie goes deep into learning about Vikings and runology from a hunky professor.

What a fun concept to serialize a book like this! The author intends to put out an episode every two weeks until it’s complete. This harkens back to the days in the 1840s and 1850s when novels by people like Gaskell and Dickens were serialized in magazines. The concept completely works in the modern day, where we can just grab a little piece of a story—say over lunch or waiting at the doctor’s office—and whet our appetite for the next installment.

At the beginning of this episode, the author discusses that she herself has been studying Old Norse and runology as a part of her master’s degree. This made me wonder if some of what Lainie is learning is what the author has been learning in her own classes. She gives us a nice set of resources at the end if we want to learn more about Old Norse, Vikings, and runology.

Looking forward to the next installment!

Murder at a Beauty Pageant

Presley is not too thrilled that her first assignment with Cooper’s security company is at a teenage beauty pageant. Cooper explains that as one of the few females on the team she’ll have access to areas that the men can’t or shouldn’t go to. They barely arrive at the pageant when one of the contestants is found dead.

Is the girl a victim of foul play? What enemies could a teenage girl have? Do any of the other contestants have it out for her?

This was a fun and different setting for this cozy mystery series. Presley is not the type of girl to appreciate a beauty pageant! She does, of course, appreciate getting tangled up in a mystery. I love the interaction between Presley and Cooper in this book. The first chapter alone, where Presley is not happy about this assignment, was priceless. The author has come a long way making these two characters so distinct and unique. After having read several of this series in a row, it’s interesting to see the characters’ evolution through the series as well as how the author just gets better and better at working with them.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a fun protagonist to follow, you might enjoy this installment of the Presley Thurman Mystery series.

Thumbnail Sketch about How to Publish & Promote

As I have in the past published cookbooks as well as written some unpublished fiction and nonfiction books, I’m always interested in books that discuss writing, publishing, or book marketing. I was drawn to this title right away. The subtitle made me even more interested in reading the book, as I have been contemplating this exact idea: to use a non-fiction book to help promote my business.

The author starts at the beginning, first discussing writing your manuscripts and getting that first draft together. While eBooks are mentioned throughout, she emphasizes printed books, whether self-published or traditionally published. She has several chapters about getting your book ready for production, book options, and the publishing industry. The bulk of the book talks about how to market your book in a variety of ways, from publicity and distribution to online marketing options including social media. There’s a bonus chapter at the end about using WordPress as your website platform.

What I liked: Early on, she has a layout plan to help structure a non-fiction book. It is straightforward, but I could see how it could be useful in helping a writer organize thoughts before writing. She also breaks down the basic front and back matter components of a book; if you haven’t written one before, you may not have paid attention to these sections in the books you’ve read. In the book design chapter, I liked her bulleted list of things to think about to have a good internal format. The production and quoting lists are helpful. I thought the chapters on marketing gave a broad range of ideas.

What I didn’t like: Her discussion about getting a good editor, which happens in different parts of the book, wasn’t quite all it could have been. I am a freelance copyeditor and line editor myself, so I understand from a professional level that what she describes as editing may not be how a particular editor edits. There are levels and different types of editing, and the editors or proofreaders you may work with may not do what she says they do. Be prepared for variation in the real world.

The author does stress the importance of getting a book edited. I find it ironic, therefore, that this book has a significant amount of errors in grammar, punctuation, and formatting, particularly with commas. Specifically, they are often missing between independent clauses in a compound sentence as well as after the second-to-last verb phrase (predicate) before a coordinating conjunction in a sentence with more than three verb phrases. Some other punctuation in the book is unusual to American eyes, but I understand that she is Australian and believe these differences are okay by Aussie standards. However, I believe those comma rules I just mentioned hold true in either variant of English. I did receive an ARC of this book, so I may have read a pre-edited/proofed version. Some words were inconsistently spelled. Sometimes spaces were missing between words or were added before punctuation.

Each chapter is rather short and concise. If you’re looking for detailed information about how to put what she says into action, you won’t see as much of that here as you might like. She points you in the right direction (usually), but there are a lot of details you will have to figure out on your own. By the way, most of what she says could be applied to launching ANY book, not just non-fiction meant to help your business.
